Tacheng is a county-level city and the administrative seat of Tacheng Prefecture, in northern Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang It was established in XVI century by Uygur traders from Kashgar and Atush.
It is located in the Dzungarian Basin, some 10 km from the Sino-Kazakhstan border. Population accounts 56,400. Long a major center for trade with Central Asia, it is an agricultural hub. Its industries include food processing, textiles, and utilities.
The climate is dry and continental, average temperature in January is -10oC, in July is 28oC.
There are such tourist attractions as the Badanxing Nature Reserve, Sarkule Lake, and Baketu Port.
